MTL Long Sky 2 Trail Running Shoe

Bought my first pair of these a few years ago, and I’m now in my third. I’ve put these things through mud, sandstone, snow, and pretty much anything else you can think of without any issues. The vibram holds up amazingly well, and the firmer ride provides a midsole that doesn’t break down like a lot of other shoes. The slight drop, and front rocker of this shoe make it feel natural underfoot, and not like I’m fighting the shoe when I really try to pick up the pace. There are very few shoes that I have been satisfied with to this level!

I don’t run on trails but I do hike and these have done everything I need them to whenever I don’t feel like wearing boots. Definitely go 1/2 a size down. So if you wear 10 get a 9.5. Comfortable, stylish and also great for weightraining due to the low stack height and great stability

I bought 2 pairs last year (one black, one pink/white). I love these shoes. They fit very snug without being tight on my feet. I have worn through one set of soles, but it had hundreds of miles on it. I did a rough mudder in them. Everyone else was slipping and sliding all over the place and I gripped on everything, mud, rocks, wood. I even tried to be kool and slide down a steep slide area and almost face planted because although my momentum and body went forward, my feet did not 😅 My only real “complaint” is that the lettering on the side pealed off rather quickly, and once the white was used on the first real muddy run, they were brown… but I guess that is unavoidable and I don’t really care. They still look great.

I live in Costa Rica and love hiking, my uncle who lives in the States helped me buy this shoes and brought them to me in Costa Rica. I worn them form my first hike, as many people have mentioned, they hurt the skin in the back of your heel. Extremely disapointed to say the least, I was hoping for a confortable versatile pair of shoes and got the exact opposite. I dont know if I am going to be able to wear them at all, what a waste of money. Probably never going to buy anything Merrell again.

If you’ve had enough of the insane monster stack shoes made for California carpet give these a try. Just enough cushion to get through 10 -15 miles. A ton of feel and a nimble stable base. I use it specifically for big vert technical days.

I found them roomy and very long but sizing down 1/2 from my regular size (1 full size down from my typical running shoe size) worked fantastic for a snug performance fit with amazing heel lock. Going true-to-size had too much length in front of the toe which led to tripping, and the heel was a little sloppy as well. The toe box is still wide enough to allow for toe splay even when sizing down. The Vibram tread has extremely good grip on technical trails, they are light enough for climbs, and have a close ground feel. There is adequate cushioning for sub-ultra distance I think: they felt supportive for me on trail runs up to 3 hours but I had problems after that with feet swelling and the low volume fit due to me sizing down. I'm sure some could wear them for a lot longer than 3 hours. The laces are quite long which is helpful for using the runners knot. It's also a very good looking shoe in my view. They're not well suited to firmer, flatter trails as they don't have the bounce, rocker, or propulsion I've come to enjoy in a road shoe. But for quick technical work they are unparalleled in my experience.

The tongue is attached to the body of the shoe (which was not obvious from looking at the online product pictures.). I find such shoes to be impossible to get on without a shoe horn, rendering them totally impractical.

I saw these on sale, and decided to give them a try. After a two mile hike, on a flat smooth surface, I now have half dollar sized swollen blisters on each heel. I wore quality hiking socks, so that was not the problem. I am not sure if this design is just horrible for my specific foot, but again, I have never had an issue like this before in my life. I have pictures, but I will spare you. I have been wearing Merrells for years, and never once had an issue.

Color started wearing off almost immediately... Not even in harsh conditions. After about a week of wearing, I developed a pretty severe hip and backache. The only thing that changed in my life are these shoes. I hate to return them to REI, bc I love the bold colors. I think I just need more cushion and support than these provide.

Like many distance hikers, I've gone to wearing lighter trail running shoes. I was extremely please with the design of the tongue of this shoe, which led to great fit and stability on the trail. I've used these on the High Divide trail in Olympic National park, on ocean side trails in Olympic, in Arches and in the southern section of Canyonlands in slot canyons... Great performance in all of the locations and no sore feet...
