Tongue exposed foam is NOT a design flaw
Several people mentioned these shoes are "flawed" b/c of exposed foam on the tongue with one reviewer even so much as posting a pix. These reviewers are likely dating themselves b/c many of the older Nikes from 70's and 80's and even current retro Nike models also have this "exposed" foam.
These shoes are very comfortable and since Nike has a big hand in Cole Haan shoes now, I'm not surprised to see this design. It is a retro look and many people liked that and were glad Nike was bringing it back to many of their shoes. It does not cause any issues with wearing the shoes so don't take those other reviews as a negative impact to your decision.
I kinda laughed when I saw people were surprised at this and actually thought this was a factory flaw like they failed to finish building the shoe. Now I'm dating myself. Ha ha.

Poorly Made
Thought I’d give Cole Haan a chance again. The tongue of the shoe is foam that looks ripped. A definite return and purchase regret

AWESOME Retro Runner!
Great style! A little Retro with modern splash....really comfortable and cool! I saw comments about the exposed tongue foam. It's purposeful to give it the feel and look of original runners of the 70's & 80's!

Not Cole Haan Quality!
This shoe is cheaply made, unlike most Cole Haan shoes. Check out the exposed foam in the pic. I’m shocked and disappointed at the unrefined/cheap finish details. This is not the quality I am accustomed to from Cole Haan and will be more wary in the future.

Cole Haans vs Hoka
Super comfortable, wide sole makes them very cushy. I got these instead of Hokas. I think they are more versatile, can wear them if running, super casual or a bit more sporty. Couldn't do that with Hokas - they stand out too much. Will be traveling and doing a ton of walking. I plan on wearing these day and night. Mine are the "silver birch" which is really a light brown.
