Blue Lily and Large Butterfly was painted by Marianne North in Natal, South Africa. North was a famous traveling biologist of the nineteenth century. She is famous for her botanical and naturalistic paintings that she produced when she was painting around the globe as a traveling artist. She traveled to seventeen countries on six continents to paint the interesting and exotic plants that she encountered. At least four of the plants that she painted were newly discovered in the world of science and named after her. Now her collection of over eight-hundred paintings is set in the corner of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, where her writings and other discoveries are kept.
